The PSOE is studying to run for the Senate with other progressive formations in the general elections on November 29. The socialist leadership is analyzing this formula to prevent the PP from renewing its absolute majority in the Upper House, according to sources from the PSOE confirmed to DEMÓCRATA after what was advanced in this regard this Friday by El País, which pointed out that Ferraz is waiting to know the configuration of the Broad Front to initiate formal contacts about the candidacies.
Why a joint candidacy can change the distribution
The strategy responds to the electoral system of the Senate. In the provincial constituencies, four senators are elected, but each voter can vote for a maximum of three candidates. The candidacies are individual for voting and counting purposes, and the citizen can choose names from different formations. The island constituencies, Ceuta, and Melilla have specific rules.
A shared candidacy would allow concentrating the support of different electorates on the same candidates. Thus, the left could improve its chances against the PP, although the sum of the votes of the parties separately does not guarantee that all their voters will subsequently support the names of a coalition.
The precedent of Ibiza and Formentera
The formula has a recent experience. In the 2023 general elections, PSOE, Sumar, Esquerra Unida, and Ara Eivissa ran together and achieved one senator, taking that position from the PP.
This precedent now serves as a reference to explore new agreements. Its extension will depend on whether the formations agree on the candidates and the conditions of the alliances before closing the lists for November 29.
