The United States Army has reported the execution of new airstrikes "in coordination" with the authorities of Somalia against alleged Al Shabaab enclaves, a group associated with the terrorist organization Al Qaeda, in various areas of the African country, in a context of increased operations of this kind in recent weeks.
In a brief statement, the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has indicated that the offensives took place on September 25 near Uelmaro and Alí Farhan, localities close to Jilib, in southern Somalia.
"AFRICOM, along with the Government of Somalia and the Somali Armed Forces, continues to take measures to reduce Al Shabaab's ability to threaten U.S. forces and our citizens abroad," emphasized the U.S. command, while the Mogadishu Executive has not yet issued a public assessment of these actions.
The Somali president, Hasán Sheij Mohamud, stated in early July that the Army will launch "a final offensive" to defeat Al Shabaab, highlighting that preparations are already underway by the authorities. In parallel, U.S. forces have intensified in recent weeks the acknowledged bombings against the group in Somali territory.
