The spokesperson for the Popular Group in Congress, Ester Muñoz, emphasized this Thursday that, for the Popular Party, the public pension system is "non-negotiable" and that its goal is to guarantee its "sustainability" if it reaches La Moncloa after the general elections on November 29.
In a media briefing, Muñoz responded to questions about whether she stands by her recent statements in which she defended that the current pension model must be modified because "it doesn't work" and "is going to burst".
"My party is committed to what it has done when it has governed and to what we have said for a long time: Pensions are non-negotiable, they are guaranteed for today's pensioners, and we commit to ensuring the solvency of the system so that the youth of the future have those guaranteed pensions," the popular leader stated.
In relation to those words, she explained that she was referring to the title of the Airef report of 2026, which indicates that "the spending rule is met, but that does not guarantee the sustainability of the system": "It's not something that Esther Muñoz says, it's something that Airef says, you just have to read the report."
She reiterated that the PP's proposal is to "guarantee the public pension system and that the youth of tomorrow have a pension exactly like the one our elders have today."
Muñoz stressed that the "only reality and truth" is that the only Executive that "froze pensions" in Spain was the one presided over by José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero in 2010, a decision that had the "vote in favor" of the current president, Pedro Sánchez, who was then a deputy in Congress.
"No PP Government has ever done that and, of course, we are not going to do it, because for us pensions are non-negotiable, and what we are going to do is work to guarantee the sustainability of the system and that today's youth can have their pensions guaranteed," Muñoz emphasized, downplaying the significance of her previous statements made in "a casual podcast for young people." "It's not a parliamentary intervention or before the media, it's a conversation in which I say something that is in the Airef reports," she added.
"For us, the public pension system is non-negotiable," reiterated the popular spokesperson, who recalled that the proposal of the president of the PP and candidate for the Presidency of the Government, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, is that pensions "continue to increase according to the CPI." "What we are saying is that we are going to guarantee the sustainability of the system, improving the economy, making it more productive, more competitive, that wages improve and that, therefore, there are more contributions to social security thanks to the work of the country," he concluded.
