Alberto Núñez Feijóo and Isabel Díaz Ayuso share this Saturday, September 5, a political event in Getafe with which the Madrid PP opens a course marked by the regional and municipal elections of 2027.
The meeting comes after the differences on how to respond to the new model of regional financing. The Madrid Government defended not attending the meeting called by the Treasury and asked that the rest of the communities governed by the PP support that strategy. Likewise, the issue of the controversial penthouse bought by Madrid last spring appears in the background, on which Feijóo has already commented in an interview asking for explanations from Heritage.
The coincidence on stage will allow us to observe whether both leaders present a shared response or maintain differences on the instruments that the opposition should use.
Where and at what time the meeting is held
The event is scheduled for 11:30 at the Hotel Exe Getafe. The participation of Feijóo, Ayuso, and Antonio José Mesa, spokesperson for the PP in the municipality and candidate for the upcoming local elections, is expected.
The call brings together leaders and affiliates of the party and is framed in the beginning of political activity after the summer. During the weekend, the parliamentary days of the Popular Group in the Assembly of Madrid are also held.
The scenario has a municipal dimension, but the presence of the national president turns the meeting into an opportunity to set the message of the entire party.
The disagreement is not only about the financing model
The Madrid Executive argues that the Treasury's proposal harms equality among communities. Its response was to propose the absence of the PP regional governments as a mechanism to prevent it from prospering.
The call did not receive the support of the rest of the regional executives. Madrid assured that it had conveyed its position to the national leadership.
The difference, therefore, affects the strategy: sharing criticism of a reform does not obligate agreement on whether it is advisable to negotiate it, reject it through a vote, or not participate.
What can clarify the joint image
Its relevance will be in the messages. A common position on the next steps would provide more information than a shared photograph. The absence of references to the disagreement, on the contrary, would leave pending how they will coordinate their decisions.
Feijóo must articulate a national response that brings together governments with different territorial interests. Ayuso defends a Madrid position that seeks to set the tone of the opposition to the Executive.
A course with the elections of 2027 on the horizon
The call also serves to prepare for the next electoral cycle. The Madrid PP has placed the work of mayors, councilors, and candidates among the priorities of its organization.
Getafe allows for the unification of the two planes: the national dispute with the Government and the construction of municipal candidacies. The challenge for the party consists of conveying a recognizable position without erasing the differences between the territories it governs.
