The Lehendakari, Imanol Pradales, has called on all political formations for a deep reflection on the current "tension, crispation, and confrontation" that dominates public debate, and has warned that, "without seeking dialogue," one can end up in "situations" similar to that of Saxony-Anhalt. In his view, the recent elections in this German federal state are "an example" of the "risk" that "Western democracies" face against "far-right movements."
In an interview on "Hoy por Hoy" of the "Cadena Ser," reported by Europa Press, Imanol Pradales expressed his great concern about the possibility of the far-right coming to power "in any Western country, and also in Europe."
He emphasized that, during the political course 2026-2027, elections will be held in countries like France, Poland, Italy, or Spain, and referenced the electoral event this past Sunday in Saxony-Anhalt, where the far-right formation Alternative for Germany (AfD) won, which he considers a clear "risk that Western democracies face" against "far-right movements, and what that means."
When questioned about whether the PNV will do "everything in its power" to prevent the Spanish far-right from reaching the central Executive, he recalled that the jeltzale formation "has always shown a series of clear democratic principles and has historically fought democratically against any far-right or far-left movement."
In this sense, he stressed that "if the PNV has had anything, it has been a democratic conviction based on the Christian humanism that it has historically defended, and that has always led it to be on that side of history."
"Reflection" and call for dialogue
The Lehendakari has emphasized that, "beyond what the Basque Nationalist Party does," this is a matter that those who hold "political and institutional responsibilities" must "reflect on."
"Where are we going to lead the society we intend to serve and that we must serve if all we do is promote crispation, tension, political polarization, and confrontation without seeking dialogue, negotiation, and the consensuses that are an unequivocal part of what it means to govern and do politics," he stated.
In his opinion, it is "a reflection that it is important for all political parties in the State to make" because, if they do not do so, "we will have to face situations like the one we are living today in Saxony in Germany in a specific land but with the capacity for contagion that this has in the European context."
