The deputy spokesperson for Compromís in Les Corts, Isaura Navarro, has registered a non-legislative proposal (PNL) to urge the Consell to coordinate with the City Council of Valencia in order to stop "any eviction or removal" of the people residing in the settlement located in the old urban Formula 1 circuit, "without a previously existing plan for dignified, permanent relocation agreed upon with social services."
As the deputy explained, "we are talking about 800 people who are currently threatened by the PAI of the Grau and by a threat of eviction from the place where they are living. People for whom neither the Generalitat nor the City Council have committed, as of today, to provide an alternative housing solution," as the coalition states in a statement.
Navarro has reminded that the current Valencian regulations "both in terms of housing and social services establish obligations for public administrations to address situations of social and residential emergency and guarantee a dignified alternative accommodation before executing the eviction of vulnerable people."
In this sense, she has argued that "therefore, what we are proposing is to stop any attempt at eviction, which would be absolutely illegal, and to create a social census of the people who are living there, which, by the way, includes Sahrawi people as well, all kinds of people who do not have a place to live and who have made a home in that area and have been living there for years, so they have every right to continue living there until they are given that housing solution."
From Compromís, they emphasize that the residents of the settlement are "living poorly in that area, without water or resources," and demand that they be guaranteed "immediate access to basic emergency supplies." Navarro has added that "if the City Council and the Generalitat have money to hold minor competitions like the SailGP, they also need to have money to provide housing solutions and dignified housing for all these people."
Participation table and review of the PAI of the Grau
Along with the halt of evictions, the coalition proposes the creation of a citizen participation table on this issue, in which the neighborhood associations of the Poblats Marítims of Valencia and social entities are present, with the aim of "deciding in a co-responsible manner the future of the land."
Compromís also proposes to review the PAI of the Grau so that at least 50 percent of the new buildability is allocated to public housing in the form of affordable and social rental. In addition, it advocates redesigning urban planning towards a model of estuary park and green corridor between the course of the Turia and the Marina, "prioritizing permeable green infrastructure, reducing the heat island effect, and recovering industrial heritage instead of constructing large private towers."
