EDP has strengthened its service portfolio in Spain by prominently incorporating its know-how in engineering and construction of substations and power lines aimed at industrial clients, ports, and logistics platforms, key infrastructures to advance in the electrification of the economy, as well as to renewable energy promoters, the company reported.
In this line, the group has recently completed in the province of León, for a renewable promoter, the full execution of a high voltage underground line (132 kV) of 14 kilometers and a 30/132 kV transformer substation of 120 MVA, essential installations for the evacuation of the energy generated by a large photovoltaic plant.
This development represents a step forward in the consolidation of EDP in the Spanish market for the business of substations and lines, with solutions designed to provide greater efficiency, agility in deployment, and lower impact.
Innovation with cable plowing technology
With this project, EDP has applied for the first time in Spain the cable plowing technology for the laying of underground power lines, a method that replaces the conventional opening of trenches with a system that continuously introduces the cable underground while reconstituting it.
According to the energy company, this service is aimed at companies that need to adapt or reinforce their power networks to accompany their electrification and expansion plans, "consolidating EDP as a reference technical partner for the development of energy projects in a rapidly expanding market."
The company emphasized that the electrification of industrial processes is gaining increasing weight in the strategy of companies and in the European agenda, driven by the objectives of energy transition, improvement of competitiveness, and strengthening of strategic autonomy.
This process requires allocating resources to new electrical infrastructures capable of responding to the increase in demand, from the expansion of substations to the reinforcement of supply lines and connection systems.
The head of Client Solutions in Iberia for EDP, António Araújo, emphasized that the adoption of cable plowing technology and the execution of new evacuation infrastructures consolidate the group's commitment "to innovative solutions that reduce impacts, shorten timelines, and improve the competitiveness of renewable and industrial projects." "At EDP, we continue to work to offer our clients high-value services that drive the energy transition," he added.
In coherence with this expansion of activity in Spain, EDP transfers to the Spanish market the experience accumulated in Portugal, where in recent years it has already put into service 13 substations and eight electrical lines, from medium to high voltage, both for industrial clients and for renewable developers.
