The Ibex 35 has concluded the session this Tuesday with a slight decrease of 0.12%, staying at 19,997.10 points. The day has been conditioned by the tariff escalation between Canada and the United States and by the rise in crude oil prices to around 100 dollars per barrel.
Canada has decided to apply tariffs of between 15% and 50% on around 20 billion dollars in exports from the United States, as retaliation for the 50% tariffs imposed by Washington on Canadian products that began to take effect in August.
This new trade front has pushed energy references upwards. The Brent barrel, a reference in Europe, rose at the close of the stock exchanges of the Old Continent by 0.93%, to 97.90 dollars, while the West Texas Intermediate (WTI), a reference in the United States, advanced to 92.90 dollars, 1.51% more.
In the macroeconomic chapter, before the opening, the GDP data of Japan has been published, which recorded a growth of 0.4% in the second quarter of the year, one-tenth less than in the previous quarter, but one-tenth above what was expected in mid-August.
It has also been reported that the inflation rate of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) stood at 4.1% in July, one-tenth below the June figure, with energy prices stabilized at rates of 10%.
The markets are also looking at the monetary policy meeting that the European Central Bank (ECB) will hold this Thursday, in which the consensus expects an increase of 25 basis points in official interest rates.
"It is likely that this will be the last increase, but the threshold for new tightening measures remains low. Our baseline hypothesis remains that September will mark the last increase of this tightening cycle. Although growth has shown resilience, we still consider the risk of second-round effects to be low," says the economist at Vanguard, Josefina Rodríguez.
In Spain, the Public Treasury has placed this Tuesday 2,416.82 million euros in an auction of three and nine-month bills, in the middle part of the expected range, raising the yield to its highest levels in almost two years. In addition, it has carried out a syndicated issuance for 20 years for 4 billion, which has received a demand of 55 billion.
In the corporate sphere, before the opening it has been announced that Indra, Alpha Impulsion, CT Ingenieros, and Mecano ID have launched the European alliance "2030+" with the aim of developing "Garnet," a new rocket engine for the next generation of European microlaunchers.
Likewise, Squirrel Media communicated before the start of trading a net profit attributed of 8.23 million euros in the first half of the year, which implies an increase of 38.6% compared to the earnings of 5.94 million recorded in the same period of 2025. The company's stock was suspended for five minutes due to the high volatility of its shares, which ultimately closed with an advance of 0.45%.
Within the Spanish Stock Exchange, the most notable rising values have been Solaria (+3.03%), Acciona Energía (+2.97%), Acciona (+2.77%), Grifols (+1.83%), and Sacyr (+0.88%). On the downside, Inditex has led the declines (-1.81%), ahead of Acerinox (-1.75%), Banco Sabadell (-1.15%), CaixaBank (-0.93%), and Puig (-0.93%).
The main European indices have closed with a mixed sign. The FTSE 100 of London has dropped by 0.10%, the Cac 40 of Paris has advanced by 0.14%, the Dax of Frankfurt has ended flat, the FTSE MIB of Milan has retreated by 0.10%, and the Euro Stoxx 50 has added 0.14%.
In the debt market, the yield of the Spanish 10-year bond has stood at 3.791%, compared to 3.823% at Monday's close, leaving the risk premium over Germany practically stable at 43.7 basis points.
In the foreign exchange market, the euro appreciated by 0.04% against the greenback, up to an exchange rate of 1.1628 dollars per euro. The day has also been marked by the recovery of the yen, which reaches highs since February at 153 yen per dollar.
Among the assets considered safe havens in times of turmoil, the price of an ounce of gold fell by 0.72%, to 4,444 dollars, while the main cryptocurrency, bitcoin, decreased by 0.22%, to 78,641 dollars.
