The State Commission of Human Rights Jalisco (CEDHJ) has reported that nearly 40 people have been arrested in Guadalajara, in the state of Jalisco, during the citizen mobilizations demanding the supply of drinking water and in good condition in the face of the arrival of dirty and contaminated water to numerous homes.
In a document disseminated by the agency, which estimates the number of detainees at 39, details are provided of allegations of abuses allegedly committed by security forces against participants in the protest, complaints that are being processed according to the internal protocols of the commission.
In this context, the CEDHJ has demanded that authorities respect the right to healthcare for all persons in custody and has urged that they be provided with the "necessary care," in addition to "determining their legal situation as soon as possible."
"It is requested to guarantee medical attention, care, and a prompt definition of the legal situation of the persons detained during the demonstration for the quality of drinking water," the state Human Rights agency has pointed out.
The march began at the Glorieta de La Minerva and advanced to the vicinity of Casa Jalisco, where the atmosphere became tense until it culminated in direct clashes between protesters and police agents deployed in the area.
During these incidents, security forces resorted to the use of tear gas and water cannons in order to disperse those participating in the gathering.
