The acting president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, reiterated this Wednesday that "there will be an electoral process" in the country when, in her opinion, Venezuela is ready to hold it, emphasizing that she has worked "tirelessly" for that scenario to materialize "when appropriate".
In an appearance before the press in Caracas, alongside the U.S. Secretary of Energy, Chris Wright — visiting after the recent oil agreement signed between both countries — Rodríguez stressed that "there will be an electoral process, but under the conditions that Venezuela is prepared for".
During that press conference, the interim head of Miraflores focused on the fact that in Venezuela "there is a Constitution and an electoral and democratic system provided in the Constitution", emphasizing that, although it is not her responsibility to set the date for the elections, she can assure that she has worked "tirelessly" since she assumed the acting presidency.
"Since January, the first thing I did was call for democratic coexistence, because the path that Venezuela had taken was not a matter of elections," she pointed out, defending that the country was on a path "where extremism sees no benefits" in "tremendous" energy agreements like the one reached with the United States, a context in which "intolerance prevailed in relations" and "hatred does not allow seeing the other".
Next, Rodríguez highlighted that her team continues to work "with the authorities" so that "the system of sanctions is definitely lifted and the Venezuelan economy, the social development of Venezuela can occur without any difficulty".
Trump states that Venezuela "is not prepared" to vote
That same Wednesday, in another press conference from the Oval Office, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, spoke about the Venezuelan situation and stated that, for now, the country does not meet the necessary conditions to hold elections.
"I don't think they are ready yet," the president affirmed, who then boasted of having "liberated from a dictatorship" the Venezuelan people, assuring that he now gets along "very well" with the government led by Delcy Rodríguez, who, he highlighted, "is doing a very, very good job".
In deepening his stance, Trump has recalled that in Venezuela there was "a very powerful and very unpleasant dictatorship" until, in January of this year, President Nicolás Maduro was captured in a U.S. attack on Caracas. As he has explained, although Rodríguez "wants" to call elections in the country, "they are still not prepared for it," although he has predicted that "they will be soon" and has added that his Administration is "eager to do so and soon."
