The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, has requested this Wednesday that the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) open an investigation into the actions of the security forces during the march held on Sunday in Jalisco, called to demand a solution to the problem of contaminated water affecting the city.

"We cannot allow there to be law enforcement in Mexico that represses and tortures. It is unacceptable," Sheinbaum emphasized, who has announced that she plans to meet with the victims. "What happened in Jalisco cannot be allowed," she said.

The leader has insisted that "the issue of torture of young people is something that has to disappear in our country. It cannot be that a law enforcement agency tortures any person, especially during an arrest," while questioning the use of tear gas and water cannons by the deployed agents.

Last Sunday, thousands of people, with estimates pointing to up to 21,000 attendees, marched through the streets of Guadalajara to the official residence of the governor of Jalisco, Pablo Lemus, to demand an immediate response to the crisis of contaminated water that has been hitting the metropolitan area for months.

During the protest, a group of participants removed the barriers placed around the governor's residence, which triggered the intervention of the Jalisco Police. As a result, around 40 people were arrested and about 60 suffered injuries.

The families of the victims and the organizers of the mobilization have reported assaults at the time of the arrests, as well as arbitrary detentions. "Who gave the order? Why? How is it possible that in 2026 there is still police torture of young people?" the president stated at her morning press conference.

Sheinbaum has reiterated her request to the CNDH for a "thorough investigation" into what happened. "It has to be investigated, sanctioned, and zero impunity, because there cannot be torture in Mexico," the leader concluded, demanding that those responsible be identified and punished.
