The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has described this Friday as "unacceptable" the decision of Israel to proceed with the expansion of settlements in the West Bank, with special attention to the E1 area, east of Jerusalem, an initiative that in recent days has been denounced by a dozen countries.
"The decision of the Israeli government to publish tenders for the construction of the E1 settlement project is unacceptable. We have been opposing this measure for a long time," she pointed out on her social media.
The German politician emphasized that this step by Benjamin Netanyahu's government, which she did not explicitly mention, "undermines the two-state solution by dividing the West Bank and breaking the territorial continuity of the Palestinian territories."
In addition, she reiterated that the community bloc remains "committed to a just and lasting peace based on the two-state solution," in a message in which she included the statement signed by a dozen countries, including Spain, Canada, and the United Kingdom, which condemns the expansion of settlements and reminds that it is "illegal" under International Law.
