Hundreds of people have gathered this Friday in front of the statue of El Oso y el Madroño, in Puerta del Sol in Madrid, to participate in a peaceful march to the home of Maricarmen, who passed away this Wednesday at the Gregorio Marañón Hospital, where she had been hospitalized since September 23 after being evicted.
The mobilization started at 8:00 PM, when the concentration, called by the Tenants' Union, began to advance along Alcalá Street towards Sainz de Baranda 46, the building where Maricarmen lived for 71 years before her eviction.
Leading the march, the Tenants' Union carried a flower arrangement in memory of the deceased, on which could be read "We will continue fighting for you. Your Union loves you," followed by a crowd holding banners and signs to keep the memory of Maricarmen alive.
During the march, attendees chanted slogans such as "They are not deaths, they are murders," in protest against the recent deaths of Maricarmen and Olga, a neighbor from L'Hospitalet (Barcelona) who took her own life after her eviction.
Among the chants, the shout "Maricarmen somos todas" stood out, with which the gathered people wanted to pay tribute to María del Carmen Abascal, who has become a symbol of the fight for the right to housing.
