The Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, has conveyed to the Spanish contingent stationed in Latvia that they constitute the "maximum expression of Spain's commitment to the Atlantic Alliance" and has emphasized their "daily effort," highlighting the "fundamental" role they play in "deterrence" tasks.

Robles has delivered this recognition to the commanders of the Spanish troops during a videoconference meeting held this Tuesday, in which she insisted that "the commitment" to NATO also implies a commitment "to the security of all of us," as stated by the Ministry in an informational note.

In the connection with the Adazi base, the head of the contingent deployed there, Lieutenant Colonel Pedro Antonio Fuentes, has presented to the minister "the latest updates on the operation 'Eastern Flank-Latvia'," a mission that Robles has described as "more than consolidated and essential," made up of about 550 military personnel.

Subsequently, the Defense Minister held another communication with Commander Francisco Rubio, head of the NASAMS Air Defense Unit, composed of 90 personnel and whose main task is "to protect the Lielvarde airbase."

"Thank you very much for everything you do and for keeping the Spanish flag very high," Robles has stated to the 650 Spanish military personnel deployed between the Adazi and Lielvarde bases, located on NATO's Eastern flank.
