The volume of passengers arriving from Italy and who have been identified in the controls established by the Government on August 8 at Spanish airports, in response to the suspension of the Schengen area by the transalpine country after the migration crisis recorded in Ceuta, amounts to almost 7,700 people, according to the latest data released by the Ministry of the Interior.

Specifically, by 1:00 PM this Saturday, August 22, documentation had been requested from 7,696 travelers upon their arrival in Spanish territory. During this period, 696 flights have been supervised and 1,144 agents have intervened in the operation.

Since the last update on Wednesday, 12 officials have carried out controls on 185 passengers from third countries who landed at Adolfo Suárez-Madrid Barajas Airport. At El Prat (Barcelona), eight officials have identified 72 passengers corresponding to four flights.

A similar situation has occurred at Málaga Airport, where five agents have controlled 5 passengers arriving on a flight from Italy. At Sevilla Airport, 10 passengers from two flights have been identified, while in Valencia, controls have been carried out on 6 nationals from third countries traveling on a flight from Italy.

At the airports in the Balearic Islands, Mallorca has concentrated the highest number of identifications, with four passengers on one flight, while in Ibiza, four passengers from one flight have been affected. In Menorca, on the contrary, no passengers from third countries were recorded in the six flights subjected to control.

In the Canary Islands, the balance is as follows: 22 identifications, from four flights, at Tenerife Sur Airport; one identification at Lanzarote Airport corresponding to a flight from Italy; and two passengers controlled on a flight that arrived at Gran Canaria Island.

The temporary reinstatement of border controls at airports and ports with direct connections between Spain and Italy will remain in place, as planned, until September 7. Meanwhile, Giorgia Meloni's Executive has not yet specified when it will lift controls at its ports and airports for travelers coming from Spain, a decision that will be made when "the risks to Italian security disappear."
