Eleven of the twelve detained for their alleged participation in the attack on a military patrol in the Benzú area, in Ceuta, will be expelled to Morocco for five years after being convicted of a crime of assault against law enforcement agents.
The accused have accepted a sentence of two years in prison, which the court has replaced with expulsion from Spanish territory, following the agreement reached between the Prosecutor's Office and the defenses. The judicial resolution states that the convicted acknowledged their participation in the events.
The twelfth detainee has not accepted this agreement by denying his involvement in the attack. The court has ordered provisional imprisonment for him while awaiting a trial to determine his responsibility.
The attack on the military patrol in Benzú
The events occurred during the early hours of Thursday in the Benzú area, when a group of people allegedly prepared an ambush against a Regulars patrol that was circulating in the area.
According to the judicial resolution, the convicted waited for the passage of a military vehicle and began to throw stones at the patrol. As a result of the attack, four soldiers were injured.
After the incident, security forces arrested twelve people for their alleged participation in the attack.
The accused who did not accept the agreement reached by the others denied during his statement having participated in the events and claimed that he was sleeping when he was arrested. In light of this denial, the procedure will continue through the ordinary route.
Tension in Ceuta after the migration crisis
The attack on the soldiers occurred in a week marked by tension in Ceuta following the massive arrival of migrants recorded at the end of July and the citizen protests that took place in the autonomous city.
In recent days, mobilizations against the management of the migration crisis have occurred, which led to incidents on Thursday at Trampolín beach, where several protesters blocked the distribution of food by the Red Cross and caused damage to structures used as shelter by some migrants.
The Minister of Territorial Policy and head of the single command for the crisis, Ángel Víctor Torres, had called that same day for a common message against violence and requested to guarantee the work of Red Cross volunteers.
The authorities have various security devices deployed while the management of the thousands of migrants who remain in the autonomous city after the massive entries of July 30 and 31 continues.
