Grupo Televisa and Fintech Holdings have reached an agreement to jointly acquire the Mexican division of the American 'teleco' AT&T for 2.000 million dollars (1.799 million euros), according to the communication sent to the Mexican Stock Exchange (BMV).
The operation will be structured through a 'joint venture', in which each of the companies will own exactly 50% of the share capital. The closing of the transaction is expected for the first quarter of 2027.
According to the notification to the stock market supervisor, the purchase will be financed through a combination of cash equity and secured debt, without recourse to the consortium that is created for the acquisition.
"We have expressed our firm conviction that the future of artificial intelligence will be based on converging networks with a dense fiber optic network," said the president and CEO of AT&T, John Stankey, in an independent press release.
"This measure allows AT&T Mexico to participate in that evolution and is consistent with our long-term strategy of focusing our capital allocation on growth opportunities in the dynamic U.S. market," he added.
AT&T Mexico is currently the second largest mobile phone operator in the Latin American country, with 24.7 million registered users as of December 31, 2026. In the last fiscal year, it reported a profit of 1.400 million pesos (68.1 million euros) and revenues of 85.400 million pesos (4.155 million euros).
According to the records of the Federal Institute of Telecommunications (IFT) of Mexico corresponding to 2024, América Móvil (Telcel) held a market share of 56.18%; followed by AT&T, with 14.85%; Telefónica (Movistar), with 14.57%; and Walmart (Bait), with 10.06%.
