The Spanish subsidiary of Rheinmetall, Rheinmetall Expal Munitions, has secured a contract from the Ministry of Defense close to 4.4 million euros to supply drone systems intended for the Eimos mounted mortar, according to information published this Friday in the Official State Bulletin (BOE).
In detail, the Economic Affairs Headquarters of the Logistics Support Command of the Army has awarded the German defense company a contract for an exact amount of 4,395,320 euros. The object is the purchase of remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS, for its acronym in English) to integrate them into the Eimos mounted mortar.
The proposal submitted by Rheinmetall has been the only one submitted in this procedure, and the award date set in the official documentation is June 26, 2026.
The announcement, sent on August 25 of the same year and signed by the head of Economic Affairs of the Logistics Support Command of the Army, Joaquín Javier González del Castillo, refers to the formalization of a framework agreement.
According to the National Institute of Aerospace Technology, the RPAS includes the aircraft, the ground control station, and the communication link system.
Regarding the Eimos ("Expal Integrated Mortar System"), it is an 81 mm mounted mortar mounted on a high mobility Vamtac ST5 platform, prepared for high mobility land operations and for landings. This system enables a quick entry into position and immediate withdrawal after firing, a tactic known as "shoot and scout."
"Mortar systems on vehicles are necessary in both conventional conflict scenarios and in asymmetric ones that occur in the operations in which the Spanish Armed Forces are currently present," informs the Army.
Rheinmetall Expal Munitions recorded a net profit of 245 million euros in 2025, representing a year-on-year increase of 18%, and achieved a record turnover of 716.7 million, 12% higher.
Similarly, the operating result (Ebit) rose to 317.1 million, 17.8% more than in the previous year, while the order book stood at 1,725 million and the order to book ratio was 2.4.
