The authorities of China have updated this Wednesday the death toll to 21 from the devastating flood recorded last week in the border area between the Chinese autonomous region of Tibet and Nepal, a disaster that has already left more than 1,100 dead in Nepalese territory.
In this way, the Government of the region, known in China as Xizang and located in the southwest of the country, has confirmed the death of at least 21 people and has placed the number of missing at 541 in the Chinese part, according to data released by the television network CGTN.
Among the nearly 550 people whose whereabouts remain unknown -- a figure that authorities have been reducing as the lifeless remains of some of the missing are located -- it is estimated that about 260 would be foreign citizens.
Likewise, the authorities have indicated that the road leading to the Gyirong border post, in the hardest-hit area of China, is back in service after the intense cleaning and removal of mud and debris that has been carried out in the area.
Since the disaster occurred, the roads crossing the valley have suffered significant damage, with rocks and mud blocking the passage in numerous sections. During the initial phase of the rescue operation, teams have conducted preliminary searches, mainly on foot, relying on drones for reconnaissance and transporting light equipment by air. With the reopening of access, the work can continue in a broader and more detailed manner.
