The Italian Government has agreed to extend for one more week the controls in the Schengen area applied at the border with Spain following the massive entry of migrants in Ceuta at the end of July. The extension is adopted with the idea of coordinating with the Spanish authorities the end of these measures when that period concludes, at which point the countermeasure approved by the Spanish Executive will also expire.
Italian sources cited by Europa Press have indicated that, in the coming days, the interior ministers of both countries will maintain contacts to "jointly assess substitute cooperation measures."
For its part, sources from the Spanish delegation in Brussels —where a summit of heads of State and Government is being held with the participation of President Pedro Sánchez and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni— have indicated that the interior minister, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, and his Italian counterpart, Matteo Piantedosi, will work this week to "proceed with the elimination" of the controls.
