The Ministry of Health of Kenya reported this Wednesday the detection of a second infection of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola in the country. It is a 39-year-old man, a direct relative of the first confirmed positive, and both remain in quarantine, with no signs that the virus has spread among the population.

Kenyan health authorities have recorded so far two infections and one death linked to this variant, the same one that is hitting the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where more than 4,400 deaths and 9,100 cases have already been counted.

The last affected person is receiving medical attention in the same hospital where he was isolated after being previously identified as a contact of the first patient, which makes the outlook for his evolution relatively favorable. "There is no evidence of community spread of the virus," the Kenyan Ministry of Health has reiterated.

The department has identified 128 contacts related to the first case and, as of October 13, had managed to locate 113. Of that group, 108 remain in quarantine in Kenya, undergoing clinical reviews and daily temperature checks for 21 days since their last possible exposure. The other five are in different countries, whose health authorities have been notified.
