A large group of protesters, many of them with their faces covered, has paralyzed the entry and exit traffic of the port of Dover on the morning of this Saturday, the busiest port enclave in the United Kingdom.
"We are aware of a protest that is currently taking place at the port of Dover. Officers are present and talking with the protesters," the Kent County Police has reported.
The images spread by social media and British media show around a hundred people, many of them hooded or wearing masks, blocking access to this infrastructure, considered an essential corridor for the transit of travelers and goods in the United Kingdom.
The concentration is currently causing strong disruptions in the operations of the port of Dover. Traffic in both directions remains interrupted, which has caused significant delays and hold-ups on the main roads connecting to the port area.
For now, the cause of the mobilization has not been officially confirmed, although political figures in the region link it to a protest against migration, as the area is one of the main arrival points for boats crossing the English Channel.
Labour MP Mike Tapp has criticized on social media the impact of the protest on the daily lives of the residents and the complications generated at the port.
"I am fed up with idiots coming to Dover to cause disruptions. I bet that if you asked any of those 'protesters' they wouldn't know that small boat crossings have decreased by 40%," he pointed out, suggesting that the protest is part of far-right movements opposed to migration. "Go home, enjoy your weekend, and get a job," he exclaimed.
