The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has warned that the Zaporiyia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, only has diesel fuel to ensure about ten days of operation of the generators that maintain the cooling and safety conditions of the facilities.
"Diesel fuel is fundamentally important when a nuclear power plant loses external supply (...). Without external supply or more diesel shipments, the plant could suffer a total blackout in about ten days," explained the IAEA's Director General, the Argentine Rafael Grossi.
In light of this situation, the IAEA has reported that it is making arrangements to agree on a new ceasefire zone, the seventh, with the aim of allowing the repair of the Ferosplavna 1 power line.
The UN nuclear agency has also reported new detonations and explosions in the vicinity of the plant and in the neighboring city of Energodar, where most of the personnel working at the plant live.
Russian authorities, who maintain control of the facility, have reiterated their accusations against the Ukrainian Army for alleged attacks on the Zaporiyia plant and its surroundings, warning of a possible nuclear accident. Kiev, for its part, blames Moscow for these incidents.
