The Venezuelan opposition has reacted with great caution to the agreement announced this morning by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, through which Washington will control one-fifth of Venezuela's oil reserves in exchange for a large international investment aimed at revitalizing its battered oil industry.
The former vice president of the opposition National Assembly, Juan Pablo Guanipa, has called for a "calm reading" of an understanding that, in his opinion, could be decisive for the country's future.
Guanipa has admitted that it is necessary to "exploit and add value" to Venezuela's vast oil reserves and that this evidently requires the arrival of "a substantial foreign private investment." However, he has warned that this plan will fail if the population does not perceive "direct benefits."
"If we see new jobs, more investment, more income, and a new economic upturn, this agreement will have support. But if we do not see it, little by little, there will be a popular rejection," this prominent opposition figure has pointed out, who is awaiting the response of the two main leaders of the critical current against the Venezuelan government, María Corina Machado and Edmundo González.
The opposition leader has also reiterated his rejection of the current acting president of the country, Delcy Rodríguez, whom he defines as a prolongation of chavismo. "As long as we have the people who destroyed the country, a skyscraper is being built with mud pillars," he has written in a message disseminated on social media.
"The only way to truly reactivate the Venezuelan economy in the long term and make this agreement benefit both parties is with a free election that leads to a representative government, to clear rules of the game, to the rule of law, to institutions that allow us to manage our resources transparently and for the benefit of the nation," he has emphasized.
