The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has justified this Monday the agreement revealed last Friday, by which Russia will send millions of tons of diesel to the international market and to the United States. In his opinion, the pact benefits the population of the country and has emphasized that the European Union paid Moscow "250 billion dollars for energy."

"The European Union paid Russia 250 billion dollars (224 billion euros) for energy, and the media that spread fake news do not want to hear about that topic," he has written on his social networks. "I made the right decision for the American people: Always, America first!" the American president has emphasized.

His words come after a group of senators, both Republicans and Democrats, demanded this Sunday that Trump "reverse" this agreement that the president himself had described days earlier as "transcendental." The legislators argue that it violates a law that bans purchases of Russian energy while Moscow maintains its military offensive in Ukraine.

Trump made public on Friday an understanding with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, by which Russia commits to supply "immediately" more than 300,000 tons of diesel to the American market and the rest of the world. The pact also includes the shipment of "another 500,000 tons during the month of November and 1,000,000 tons immediately after," something that, according to the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, represents a "gift" that will allow Russia to obtain funds to continue the war that began in February 2022.
