The EH Bildu MEP, Pernando Barrena, has criticized the European Union for considering that "it continues to look the other way" after the massive entry recorded in Ceuta, and has warned that "we see a Europe without direction and increasingly aligned with a reactionary international."
In a video disseminated by the abertzale coalition, Barrena expresses his concern "about the serious situation being experienced in Ceuta" and emphasizes that "what happened is not an isolated event, it is yet another example of a migratory crisis that is repeating at the external borders of the European Union."
The representative of EH Bildu maintains that "the European pact on migration and asylum has not provided answers to this reality" and reproaches that "Europe continues to look the other way, externalizing its borders instead of guaranteeing the rights of migrant people and addressing the root causes."
In the same vein, he has criticized a "neoliberal model" that, in his opinion, "has shown its limits and its failure. It generates inequality, deepens the differences between territories and people, and thus condemns millions of people to a world of deeply unequal opportunities."
As an alternative, Barrena defends "the right of all people to develop a dignified life in their place of origin. No one should be forced to leave their home due to poverty, war, persecution, or lack of opportunities."
The MEP insists that "we see a Europe without direction and increasingly aligned with a reactionary international. A Europe incapable of defending its own values and standing up to those who use borders and migration as instruments of political pressure and hybrid warfare."
In his view, Morocco "is a clear example, it is using migration and borders to pressure the European Union while Europe maintains a policy of concessions and appeasement." He has also recalled that "in the last five years Morocco has received around 8 billion euros in European grants and loans."
For this reason, Barrena argues that "Europe cannot continue to externalize its responsibilities or allow migrant people to be used as bargaining chips" and demands "another Europe" that "puts human rights first, addresses the causes of migrations, and advocates for a fair, supportive economic model that guarantees a dignified life for all people."
