The parliamentary spokesperson of Izquierda Unida, Enrique Santiago, has once again emphasized Spanish sovereignty over Ceuta and Melilla and has insisted that the citizens of both autonomous cities wish to continue integrating into Spain, according to what he stated in an interview on "RNE" reported by Europa Press.
His statements come as a reply to the remarks of the Moroccan Minister of Justice, Abdellatif Ouahbi, who has invoked the "historical right" of his country over Ceuta and Melilla and has expressed support for promoting a "dialogue space" with the Spanish authorities to address this issue.
In this line, Santiago has stressed that Morocco "does not make a move without a plan" and has brought up that representatives of the U.S. Administration have already spoken in favor of "mediating" regarding this Moroccan claim. "There is nothing to mediate," concluded the IU leader.
The parliamentary spokesperson of Izquierda Unida has also demanded a "much firmer stance with Morocco" from the socialist part of the Executive and has reiterated that the migratory crisis of last July 30, in which 72,000 people crossed into Ceuta from the Moroccan border, constituted a "hybrid attack" by the neighboring country.
