The City Council of San Sebastián, through the Human Rights area, has completed the removal of "all Francoist symbolism in private buildings" existing in the city.
In an informative note, the Donostiarra Council has recalled that "in 2013 work began on the removal of Francoist symbolism from the city," at which point a call was made to the population to help locate these Francoist symbols in both public and private properties.
Later, in 2015, a catalog was published that included the location and characteristics of each plaque, and the neighborhood was asked, in coordination with the City Council, for their authorization to proceed with the removal of these elements.
Last year, the City Council updated this catalog and verified that six plaques still remained at different points in the city. Thus, and in application of Law 20/2022 of Democratic Memory, the procedure to remove the symbols and elements linked to Francoism placed on the facades of private buildings visible from the public road was restarted.
Contact was made with the homeowners' associations of these six residences and, once their approval was obtained, the process for their removal was formally initiated. Last week, the last plaques that were still registered in the municipal catalog were removed.
As the City Council has emphasized, the entire process of locating and gathering information has been carried out "with the help of the citizens" and, although the catalog is updated, it is not ruled out that there may be some additional plaque. Therefore, Donostiarras are requested to "notify it in case of detecting them."
