The full Parliament has approved this Tuesday, with the support of all groups, to urge the central Government to promote the construction of a new control tower at Menorca airport, following a non-legislative proposal registered by the Unidas Podemos deputy, José María García.
During his speech, García emphasized that "the current control tower cannot have its cracks covered even with anti-leak paint." He also warned that "it is very likely that it has a structural problem caused by the 'cap de fibló' from last August" and added that in recent dates there were leaks that forced the protection of electrical and electronic systems with plastics.
The parliamentarian recalled that the infrastructure has been operational since 1968 and that this age, as he pointed out, conditions the updating of the equipment and causes restrictions in the field of vision. "The systems fail causing delays in takeoffs and landings, failures in the radar or asbestos detachment, among other problems," he stated.
On behalf of the PSOE, deputy Verónica Llufriu supported the initiative considering that the current control tower is clearly outdated and emphasized that a simple reform or rehabilitation "is not viable." From Vox, deputy Sergio Rodríguez also announced his favorable vote understanding that it is "a strategic infrastructure" for Menorca.
On the other hand, the deputy of MÉS per Mallorca, Ferran Rosa, criticized the "total disinterest" that, in his opinion, the central Government shows regarding the situation of the control tower at Menorca airport. Likewise, PP deputy Salomé Cabrera emphasized that it is the oldest control tower in Spain and warned that a serious breakdown would force the paralysis of air traffic. "It is not a luxury, it is a necessity," she concluded.
