A citizen with dual Russian and Australian nationality has been charged this Friday with an alleged crime of foreign interference, after supposedly traveling to Ukraine with the aim of obtaining data on Ukrainian military operations that, according to investigations, he intended to subsequently provide to Russia.

As detailed by the Australian television network ABC, the suspect, Vladimir Teslov, 27 years old, was arrested last night in the town of Sumner, located west of Brisbane. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) attributes to him a charge of attempted deliberate foreign interference.

After his arrest, Teslov appeared before a court, which decided to postpone the hearing of the case until October 2. Investigators are focusing part of their inquiries on a trip that the accused made to Russia in October 2024, where he would have received military training before returning to Australian territory.

Security forces are examining his electronic devices, as well as other items considered relevant to the investigation, and do not rule out that new arrests may occur within the framework of this procedure.

"We do not want Australia to become a safe haven for those carrying out foreign interference activities on behalf of other countries," said Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett in statements to the aforementioned network.

In this way, she indicated that Teslov's arrest "sends a strong message that the task force against foreign interference has all the skills and capabilities necessary to identify, thwart, and take legal action."
