An Israeli court has imposed on Wednesday a sentence of more than 24 and a half years in prison on a citizen identified as Shahadeh Abu al Qiaan, an Israeli of Arab origin and a resident of a village in the south of the country, for having enlisted in the Army with the purpose of spying in favor of one of the Palestinian militias involved in the attacks of October 7, 2023.

The sentence has been issued by the Beersheba District Court, which had already declared him guilty in December of aggravated robbery, several offenses related to the use of firearms, membership in a terrorist organization, and collaboration with the enemy in time of war.

Al Qiaan then accepted the charges as part of an agreement with the Israeli Prosecutor's Office, which claims that this defendant "decided to act against the State" after a demolition order for his home in Atir, a small Arab Bedouin locality located in the Negev desert, was notified to his father in mid-2019.

Shin Bet agents arrested Al Qiaan in May 2022, just eight days after he joined the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), where, according to the accusation, he intended to "gather information within the Army about Bedouin soldiers, bases, and military sites."

The indictment, reported by "The Times of Israel," also details that Al Qiaan had integrated a year earlier into the Mujahideen Brigades and that he was transferring them "information and images of IDF bases, train stations, state-owned companies, and shopping centers."

According to the same outlet, Al Qiaan's file has been sent to the Minister of the Interior, Yariv Levin, to study the possibility of revoking his Israeli citizenship.
