The Secretary General of the Socialist Party of La Rioja and spokesperson for the Parliamentary Group, Javier García, has officially registered his pre-candidacy within the PSOE to run for the Presidency of the Government of La Rioja in the regional elections scheduled for 2027.
Yesterday, Friday, September 4, the Rioja federation of the PSOE opened the deadline to present pre-candidacies for the primaries ahead of the regional and municipal elections in the cities of Logroño and Calahorra.
This internal procedure will conclude on Monday, September 7, at 12:00 noon. In this first phase, individuals who apply do not need endorsements, although they will have to gather them in case multiple options arise and a vote among the membership needs to be organized.
"Since I took on the leadership of the PSOE in La Rioja," García said on the social network X, "I was clear about my goal: to be useful to the people of La Rioja, with a different style of doing politics; to put all my abilities and experience at the service of my land, and to build a collective project for a community that deserves much more."
In this same message, he advanced: "The time has come to formalize that commitment and take a step forward to lead a new era in La Rioja. It will be a true honor to run for president of the best autonomous community in Spain. I am not lacking in desire, enthusiasm, ideas, and commitment."
Calendar of the socialist primaries
In the event that multiple pre-candidacies that meet the conditions set by the party are presented, the period for collecting endorsements will take place between September 9 and 16. Once these supports are verified, an informative campaign for the different candidates will be carried out between September 17 and 25.
The voting of the membership is scheduled for September 26 and, if a second round is necessary, it will be held on October 3, following the established internal calendar.
Alternative project and municipal experience
"Since I took on the General Secretariat of the Socialist Party in 2025, I was clear about the objective," García stated, "first, to unify the Socialist Party, then, to serve the people of La Rioja from the parliamentary opposition work."
"And, thirdly, to build an alternative political project to the Popular Party with the people of La Rioja," he added, and for that reason, he indicated, he has formalized his pre-candidacy.
He does it, he has said, "with a lot of enthusiasm, with a lot of desire and bringing all" his "capabilities and experience in the municipal area as mayor of Arnedo to put it, now, at the service of the entire autonomous community of La Rioja."
"So I am eager, with a team, with proposals and it is going to be a few months of a lot of work, very intense, to build that alternative that La Rioja needs," he has concluded.
