Anticapitalists is finalizing a public event for the next September 24 that will serve as the starting gun for the alternative left candidacy it is promoting for the 2027 regional and municipal elections in Madrid.
At the same time, Movimiento Sumar has launched this month the constituent assembly of the organization at the regional level, as part of its roadmap for territorial implantation and its commitment to possible electoral agreements with its state political partners.
In the case of Anticapitalists, an extraparliamentary formation in the community, it has set as its goal to follow in the footsteps of Adelante Andalucía, which achieved a notable result in the last Andalusian elections, and launches the initiative "Liberate Madrid," with which it seeks to confront the PP and raise a candidacy made up of activists and representatives of civil society.
"Many people recognize that there is a void in the left in Madrid, it is a widespread opinion not only among activists and militants but also among those who have taken to the streets of Madrid in recent months in the mobilizations for the right to housing given the impunity against speculators both from the Madrid government and from the central executive," they maintain in Anticapitalists.
According to the party, this proposal will have its culminating moment on the 24th, when the foundations will be set to structure that future candidacy for the upcoming elections and try to become a significant player in the progressive space.
SUMAR DEFENDS BROAD ALLIANCES
For its part, Movimiento Sumar will carry out an internal milestone with the celebration of its constituent assembly in the Community of Madrid, a process that has already been repeated in several autonomous communities after the state congress held in July.
With this regional conclave, Movimiento Sumar will outline its political project for Madrid, define its internal organization, and elect the people who will make up its governing bodies.
The formation states that it is implanting itself in Madrid as "a necessity to include ecological laborism and citizenship rights in the left alternative to the excluding society model that has been governing the Community for 30 years."
In a statement sent to its members, it emphasizes that its goal is "to work to weave alliances" not only with the forces that are already its partners at the state level but also with any actor who shares the goal of moving towards a fairer society.
This Saturday a face-to-face meeting is scheduled with supporters of Movimiento Sumar around the constituent assembly, in order to gather their contributions. To participate in the process it will be necessary to register as an enrolled member before midnight on the 9th.
Between September 13 and 16, candidacies and amendments to the documents can be submitted, while from September 19 to 26 the voting for the lists will take place. On the 26th, the in-person plenary will be held to close the assembly meeting.
At the state level, Sumar, Más Madrid, Comuns, and IU are immersed in negotiations to revalidate a coalition candidacy for the upcoming general elections, with the intention of finalizing their lead candidate and the brand with which they will run.
PODEMOS WILL SOON LAUNCH ITS PRIMARIES
In parallel, the national spokesperson for Podemos, Pablo Fernández, announced that the internal primary process to configure their lists for the municipal and regional elections will soon be initiated.
The party, which was left out of the Assembly of Madrid in the 2023 elections, already has its reference cleared for the Madrid regional elections after its general secretary, Ione Belarra, announced that she aims to lead the Podemos candidacy and be a key player in ousting the PP from the regional government.
The panorama of the alternative left points to greater fragmentation after the movement of Anticapitalistas and the rejection of the possibility of a joint list between Más Madrid and Podemos, two forces that have not managed to converge.
The Minister of Health, Mónica García, is the candidate of Más Madrid, the second most voted force in the 2023 elections, and the organization has repeatedly claimed its status as a reference project of the alternative left in the community.
Más Madrid has specified that it is willing to open conversations with IU and Movimiento Sumar for these elections, but emphasizing that its brand is, in its opinion, the one that enjoys the greatest recognition among the progressive electorate.
