The Denomination of Origin La Mancha has officially decided to expand its production area with the incorporation of the municipal term of Albacete, which is now integrated into the wine territory protected by this quality figure.

This novelty is recorded in a resolution from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Rural Development of Castilla-La Mancha, "by which the normal modification of the terms of the wines with Denomination of Origin Protected La Mancha is approved."

The request to modify said terms was registered on December 3, 2025, and has finally been accepted by the Denomination of Origin itself. In the words of its manager, Ángel Ortega, it represents "a double pride, since symbolically Albacete is the most important Manchego city of all and a city that we have always felt very close to the Denomination of Origin La Mancha."

With this update, Albacete capital joins the other 192 municipal terms of the provinces of Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, and Toledo that already make up the DO, adding to the 14 Albacete municipalities that were part of the production area until now. In this way, the presence of the Denomination of Origin is reinforced in a province with deep historical, economic, and cultural ties to the vine.

A broader territory of the DO La Mancha

The entry of Albacete into the DO constitutes a new advance for a Denomination of Origin defined by the extension and variety of its territory, but united by shared natural conditions that support its clear wine-oriented direction. La Mancha is described as "a flat land, without great heights and with a reddish soil resulting from Miocene sediments of limestone structure."

The Terms of Conditions themselves emphasize that the "geographical environment provides the wines of the Denomination of Origin La Mancha with balanced characteristics both in acidity, which is an important factor for their quality and plays a fundamental role in such notable qualitative aspects as their coloring intensity, their chemical and biological stability, and their organoleptic characteristics, such as their alcoholic degree, considering that the area enjoys more than 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, the wines of the Denomination of Origin La Mancha are influenced by an environment of extreme dryness and high sunlight."

Thanks to this expansion, the vineyard plots and the wineries located within the municipal term of Albacete will be able to voluntarily apply for the Denomination of Origin, as long as they meet the requirements set for their registration, production, and control.

According to the manager of the DO, Ángel Ortega, with the announcement made in August "it is expected that it may allow time for this current harvest campaign for some winemaker to register their vineyards registered in Albacete to be able to produce wines already with Denomination of Origin La Mancha".

Likewise, operators interested in producing and marketing wines under the DO La Mancha label must comply with the requirements set out in the terms of reference and submit to the corresponding registration, traceability, control, and certification procedures.

More weight of the DO La Mancha in the province of Albacete

The incorporation of the capital of Albacete consolidates the territorial establishment of the DO La Mancha in one of the four provinces that traditionally make up its geographical scope.

In the case of the province of Albacete, the new terms include, in addition to the capital, the municipal terms of Barrax, Fuensanta, La Herrera, Lezuza, Minaya, Montalvos, Munera, Ossa de Montiel, La Roda, Tarazona de La Mancha, Villalgordo del Júcar, and Villarrobledo, along with part of the municipal term of El Bonillo.

For the Regulatory Council, this expansion opens the door to strengthen collaboration with local winemakers and operators and to continue advancing in the protection, dissemination, and enhancement of the origin of La Mancha wines.
